PRESS RELEASE

ACB ARRESTS POLICE OFFICER IN LILONGWE
On 25th February, 2014 the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Mr. Allan Chunga police officer at Kasiya on allegation that he solicited K15, 000.00 but received K4, 500.00 in order to release a motorcycle which he had impounded from Mhlanga for driving it without a helmet and license.

Upon investigation, the Bureau found that Chunga had solicited K15, 000.00 but received K4, 500.00 in order to release a motor bike which Mr. Mhlanga was using to transfer the dead body of Mr. Tikondane Pitala’s child who had died at Mkanda Health Center in Mchinji to Santhe in T/A Kalolo’s area in Lilongwe. The Health Center had no ambulance to carry the remains to the village. This led to the parents to hire motor bikes. Mr. Mhlanga who had taken Mr. Pitala and the dead body to the village returned to take the deceased child’s mother had his motorbike impounded by Chunga despite explaining the situation to the police officer. Relatives to the deceased buried the remains of the dead child without his mother.

Allan Chunga was taken before the First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe. The case will be transferred to the Senior Resident Magistrate Court for hearing. He was charged with two counts of corrupt practices by public officer and abuse of office contrary to Section 24 (1) and 25B (1) of the corrupt practices Act respectively.

He pleaded not guilty to all the counts. He was granted bail on the following conditions:
1. The accused to provide a cash bond of MK10,000.00 to the Court
2. The accused to furnish two sureties bonded at MK10,000.00 each
3. The accused to be reporting at the ACB Offices once every week on Tuesdays
4. The accused to surrender his driving license to the Bureau
