On 3rd December, 2012, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Village head Nankuyu (Gloria Nankuyu) of Nankuyu Village snatched subsidised fertilizer coupons from her subjects during the 2012/2013 farming season from some of her subjects and gave them to her relatives.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau followed up on the issue and established that Gloria Nankuyu snatched one coupon each from six beneficiaries in her village. The Anti-Corruption Bureau took Nankuyu to Chiradzulu Magistrate’s Court. She was charged with six counts of abuse of public office contrary to Section 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act.
On 12th November, 2014, the Chiradzulu Magistrate’s Court found Village head Nankuyu guilty and convicted her accordingly. The Court sentenced her to six months imprisonment with hard labour but suspended the sentence to 240 hours of community service. She will serve the community service at Namitambo Health Centre.
The Bureau is warning all stakeholders that is an offence to give coupons to people who are not rightful beneficiaries of Farm Inputs Subsidy Programme. Members of the public are encouraged to report such people to the Bureau as the tendency defeats the purpose of the programme.
