On 22nd September, 2018 the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested eight immigrants which included Pakistanis and Bangladeshis after they illegally entered the country through Kamuzu International Airport. They were arrested at Zalewa after they boarded a bus to Blantyre. This comes after the Bureau is investigating an allegation of connivance among public officers in allowing foreigners to use the country as a transit route to other countries. Three of those arrested were previously arrested at Chileka International Airport as they were entering Malawi. They were declared prohibited immigrants and deported by Malawi Government in August.
Upon examination of their passports, the ACB discovered that these three prohibited immigrants are in possession of new passports. Meanwhile, they are being kept at Blantyre Police Station awaiting remand to Chichiri Prison. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
