ACB ARRESTS SENIOR CLINICAL OFFICER IN LILONGWE
On 19th September, 2018 the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Mr. Charles Phiri, Senior Clinical Officer at Kamuzu Central Hospital. It is alleged that he authored a medical report purporting that Mr. Philbert Mkandawire, Managing Director of Mahembe Civil Engineering, one of the companies connected to cash gate, had undergone an operation at the Kamuzu Central Hospital. This was done with the intention to delay hearing of a corruption case in the republic vs Philbert Mkandawire. The Bureau investigations found that Mr. Mkandawire had not undergone the operation nor was his name on the list of people awaiting an operation at the hospital.
He was taken to Lilongwe Magistrate. He was charged with one count of fabricating evidence contrary to Section 105 (1) of the Penal Code.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was granted bail on the following conditions:
 Deposited with the Court MK50,000.00 cash
 Produced one surety bonded at MK50,000.00 not cash
 To report at the ACB Offices once every week on Mondays
 To notify the Bureau when he intends to travel outside Lilongwe
 Not to interfere with state witnesses
The matter has been adjourned to 3rd October, 2018 for commencement of trial.
