On 9th January, 2014, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Police officer Chawanangwa Kayira of Monkey Bay Police Station was demanding sums of money in order for him to release suspects on police bail.
The Bureau conducted investigations which established that police officer Kayira had received K48, 000.00 from two people.
On 13th September, 2018, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Police officer Kayira at Machinga Police Station where he had been transferred to last year. He was released on bail after satisfying the following conditions:
Deposited K40, 000.00 cash with the Court
Provided two sureties bonded at K50, 000 each not cash
Ordered to surrender travel documents to ACB Zomba office
To report to ACB offices in Zomba once a fortnight on Mondays
Not to interfere with state witnesses
Not to leave Mangochi/Machinga without authority from the Director of ACB
Not to commit any similar offences while on bail
He is likely to be charged with corrupt practices by public officer and abuse of public office contrary to Sections 24(1) and 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act respectively.
