On 7th March, 2019, the Malawi Police Service and Malawi Revenue Authority in
collaboration the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Kashif Gilbert and Abbas Nasser for
aiding and abetting Mr Youssef Abdul Khalek Nassour to corruptly give the sum of
K10,000,000.00 (ten million Malawi Kwacha) to a Malawi Revenue Authority Manager
in order for the said Manager (public officer) to ensure that a case file on tax evasion against Youssef Abdul Khalek Nassour and other accomplices goes missing.
Mr. Yousef Abdul Khalek Nassour and his accomplices Kashif Gilbert and Abbas Nasser travelled from Lilongwe to Blantyre where they had intended to give the bribe to the MRA Manager. The Anti-Corruption Bureau and the police were alerted by MRA and the three were arrested after they had produced the intended bribe of MK10,000,000.00. The money was handed over to ACB.
Kashif Gilbert and Abbas Nasser are likely to be charged with aiding and abbeting a
corrupt practice contrary to Section 35 of the Corrupt Practices Act. Youssef Abdul
Khalek Nassour is likely to be charged with corrupt practices with a public officer
contrary to Section 24(2) of the Corrupt Practices Act.
They appeared in Court today, 12th March, where they applied for bail. It was not
granted after the state objected to their application. They will appear in Court again on 13th March, 2019 for the Magistrate to rule on whether they should be granted bail or not after considering arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
